Family Caregiver Support Program

The Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) is a program created as Title III-E of the Older Americans Acts Amendments of 2000. The Administration on Aging administers the program at the Federal level, and the California Department of Aging and the San Bernardino County Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) administer the program at the state and county levels, respectively. The intent of the program is to serve caregivers – spouses, daughters, sons, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or neighbors – that have been providing care on an informal basis.

Direct services provided by DAAS’ Senior Information and Assistance (SIA) staff include information and assistance, outreach, education, and assessment, income support/material aid and translation services.

Contract services provided by vendors include caregiver support group, caregiver training, respite (in-home care or day care) and other support services.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Caregivers (18 or older) [family or non-family] caring for someone 60 and older or an individual (of any age) with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder.
• Caregivers 55 and older [related by blood, marriage or adoption, but is not the older adult parent of the child] who is raising a child (18 or younger, or disabled child of any age) because the biological or adoptive parents are unable or unwilling to serve as primary caregiver of the child.

Priority clients include:

• a. Family Caregivers who provide care for older individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders with neurological and organic brain dysfunction;
• b. Grandparents or other older relatives who provide care for children with severe disabilities;
• c. Family Caregivers and Grandparents or relative caregivers who are older individuals 60 years of age or older with greatest social need, with greatest economic need, and with particular attention to low-income individuals; and
• d. Family Caregivers and Grandparents or relative caregivers who are older individuals 60 years of age or older who provide care for individuals with severe disabilities, including children with severe disabilities.
